Wine Tasting 9: at the Vintage Cellar

Another week of wines at the Vintage Cellar, same rules as always. The wines are meant to be both cheap and well crafted to appeal to the college aged budget. All of the wines are Under $20 normally and under $10 on sale at the Vintage Cellar. This week featured a balance of reds and whites with unusual tastes and finished with a Riesling a sweet desert wine type at the end.

As a note I will review each wine separately giving both my impression of the wine and the description from the winemaker themselves. Following that I will rate each wine on a scale [-2, 2]. Where:

-2: Bad wine, undrinkable

-1: Disliked, but drinkable

0: Okay wine, neither disliked or liked

 1: Good wine, might buy

2: Great wine, definitely will buy

Wine #61

Name: Grande Resereve des Bastides
Variety:
20% Sauvignon Blanc

             50% Loin de l’Oeil
             30% Mauzac
Region:
Gaillac
Country:
France
Year:
2013
Price: $9.95

Winery review:
A crisp and fruity blend featuring 20% of the herbaceous Sauvignon Blanc, 50% creamy Loin de l’Oeil and notes of fresh apple and crisp pear, plus a touch of herb from the 30% Mauzac. It has a bright feel, with a hint of mineral on the finish.

My Review:

The start of this wine is unique in that it has notes that seem wheaty and slightly almost wet, musky like pancake batter. This combined with green fruit creates a nose that is almost creamy, and wheaty with just a bit of green to it. The taste shows it to have a heavy body that is wet with a white pepper zing combined with a touch of lemon grass. Overall good taste and acidity.

Wine #62

Name: Sean Minor Vin Gris
Variety:
Pinot Noir Rose
Region:
Carneros
Country:
California
Year:
2013
Price:
$8.95

Winery review:
The Vin Gris is a bright and vibrant salmon color with cherry, strawberry, cranberry and ripe watermelon aromas on the nose.  On entry, the wine displays bright strawberry flavors. Throughout the mid-palate and finish, raspberry and cherry fruit characters are balanced with spicy and crisp acidity that linger creating a refreshing and lengthy finish.

My Review:

The nose is slightly fruity like strawberries but is not very aromatic at all. On the taste it shows itself to be slightly sweet with a bitter, under ripe strawberry flavors combined with a slight muskiness to it.

Wine #63

Name: Terre di Poggio, Laude
Variety:
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo
Region:
Abruzzo
Country:
Italy
Year:
2012
Price: $8.95

Winery review:
This opens with dark aromas of leather, tobacco, cured meat, plum and prune. It shows soft tannins and loads of dark fruit on the finish.

My Review:

Fruity on the nose with hints of blackberries and pepper, this translated quite boringly into a taste of  tannic black fruit that dried out my mouth extremely. There were moderately severe tannins in this one and therefore not a huge favorite of mine.

Wine #64

Name: Charles Thomas, Cotes du Rhone
Variety: 50% Syrah
             40% Grenache
             10% Mourvèdre
Region:
Rhone
Country:
France
Year:
2013
Price: $8
.95

Winery review:
50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre. 56 Ha grown organically since March 2009 (in conversion). Part of the vineyard is plowed with horses. Average age of the vines : 30 years old. Clear ruby wine with overtones of red berry fruits. Round and supple with smooth aftertaste. A good all round red wine for meat courses, poultry and light cheeses. Best drunk now while fresh with good keeping up to 4 years.

My Review:

Black cherry raspberry and Blackberries first comes to mind when you start drinking this wine. They are apparent on the nose without being overpowering. When you start to drink this wine you see that also has sort of toasty components to it that complement the tannin structure well. It has a very heavy body with some spice like white pepper in the end sort of heating up the back of your tongue in a different way from alcohol heat. This can be very nice but I would rather have a wine that had a little bit more fruit or some heavier tannins and toastyness to it.

Wine #65
Name: Peter Mertes
Variety:
Riesling Platinum
Region:
Rheinhessen
Country:
Germany
Year:
2013
Price:
$8.95

Winery review:
This quality Riesling is crisp, clean and easy drinking. Floral and fruit aromas suggest sweet melon and honey with enough acidity to ensure a beautifully balanced and versatile wine.

My Review:

Perfectly clear, which was interesting, making me think that this wine was not very old and was not left alone long before bottling. This wine had an almost cleansing effect on my pallet. It did not provide many tastes, just some minerality both on the nose and in the pallet with no real fruity or sharp citrus flavors that I might expect. Overall a good wine for a mid meal pallet cleanser.
